Wear resistance of laser cladding coating onto titanium alloy substrate

  • In order to improve wear resistance of titanium alloy,a CO2 laser was used to clad coating onto TC4 alloy substrate with pre-placed nickel-coated graphite powder. An MXP-2000 type pin-on-disc wear tester was used to test the dry sliding friction behavior of titanium alloy and laser cladding coating. The morphology of worn surface was examined using a scanning electron microscope. The results of experiments indicate that the friction coefficient of laser cladding coating is 0.56,which is close to that of titanium alloy.Worn loss of the coating is one tenth of that of titanium alloy. It means that laser cladding coating can greatly improve wear resistance of titanium alloy. The wear mechanism of titanium alloy is adherence wear and the wear mechanism of laser cladding coating is particle wear.High hardness with TiC strengthen phase in it make the coating possess high wear resistance.
