Abstract: A non-selfsustained longitudinal discharge CO2 laser with pulsed preionization was studied for the first time. A novel spiral transversely pulsed preionization scheme is employed. The main discharge and output power of the laser are controlled by applied preionization pulses. The laser can operate free of ballast resistor. The maximum electro-optical efficiency of 19% is obtained.
